UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS
DEPT. OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR A MARIE CURIE POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The Department of Computer Science, University of Cyprus, announces
the opening of one (1) Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the
area of Data Management for Large-Scale Network-centric
Infrastructures (e.g., Grid, Web 2.0). The position is for two (2)
years, starting in early 2009. Funding comes from the European Union,
under the Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge (TOK) project SEARCHiN. We
are primarily seeking candidates with a specialization in areas such
as Semi-structured Data Management, the Semantic Web, and Metadata
Information Integration. Exposure to global computing environments,
such as network-centric systems, Grids, Web 2.0 will be considered a
plus.

Requirements and Eligibility Criteria: The Research Fellow is expected
to conduct original, independent research in collaboration with
faculty members and other postdoctoral fellows, and to actively
contribute to various academic activities (seminars, advanced courses)
planned in the context of the project. Requirements for applicants are
a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field, with a total research
experience of 4-10 years (including the years of Ph.D. study). The
Research Fellow must be a national of a state other than the Republic
of Cyprus. Furthermore, the Fellow must not have resided, worked or
studied in Cyprus for more than 12 months out of the three years
immediately prior to either the time of application, or the start of
her work. Exceptions from the first rule may be granted for European
researchers that have been working outside the EU for a long period.
(For more details on the eligibility criteria see
http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/fp6/mariecurie-actions

)

Funding: The yearly funding for fellowships will range from 48000 -
54000 euros (gross, depending on family status etc.), including
monthly living allowance and mobility allowance (subject to deductions
according to national laws). Other benefits included are travel and a
career exploratory allowance (for stays of more than 12 months). The
Fellowships are in accordance to Marie Curie rules.

Overview of the project: Recent developments in Grid Computing, the
World-Wide Web, and Global Computing are turning the Internet into a
network-centric computing infrastructure whose scope, scale, and
user-base grow at an impressive pace. As this infrastructure moves
into the mainstream of scientific and technological activity, it
becomes the prevalent medium for scientific work, for
multi-disciplinary scientific collaboration, and for decision support
in an ever-increasing number of scientific, engineering, and societal
sectors. In this context, enormous amounts of data are being generated
and stored, creating a Web of data and metadata. Consequently, the
management of data is becoming a major challenge for the successful
operation and use, and the continuous growth of the infrastructure. In
particular, searching appears as an indispensable tool for discovering
information and knowledge regarding available resources, capabilities,
services, and data. The successful paradigm of searching for textual
information on the Web cannot be applied directly to support searching
within the Web. Therefore, the searching problem needs to be
addressed in a different context, and search needs to become an
integral part of future infrastructures. In the SEARCHiN project
(SEARCHing In a Networked world), we plan to combine methods from
parallel and distributed computing, meta-data management, information
retrieval, and the semantic Web in order to achieve the scientific and
technological advances necessary to bring the simplicity and
effectiveness of Web search right at the core of future global,
network-centric computing systems.

Host institution: The project is operated by the High-Performance
Computing Systems Laboratory (HPCL) of the Computer Science Department
at the University of Cyprus. The Laboratory is a member of the
CoreGRID European Research Network of Excellence in Grid and
Peer-to-Peer Technologies and operates the Cypriot node of the EGEE
Grid infrastructure. More information on HPCL can be found under
http://grid.ucy.ac.cy

. A successful candidate will have the
opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic faculty team having a
distinguished track record of previous research, a strong network of
international collaborators at leading institutions in Europe and the
United States, access to state-of-the-art in-house computational
resources and to major international network-centric infrastructures,
such as EGEE and PlanetLab. The other partners in the SEARCHiN program
are the University of Athens, Greece (Department of Informatics and
Telecommunications, Dr. Yannis Ioannidis, http://www.di.uoa.gr

) and
the University of Manchester, UK (School of Computer Science,
Dr. Rizos Sakellariou, http://www.cs.man.ac.uk

)

Inquiries: Interested candidates should contact Dr. Marios Dikaiakos
(mdd@cs.ucy.ac.cy). Please supply a cover letter with expression of
interest and availability, an up-to-date curriculum vitae and a list
of at least two (2) references (position code:
